CHAPTER XIII

“I have two fields to explore, Sir Austin. Say when, will you? That do? Have a splash with it?” Mr. Bathurst passed the siphon. “The two fields are these. You remember that the dead man had an appointment on Monday afternoon, don’t you?”

“Yes. According to the terms of a letter that Sergeant Mansfield found on him, wasn’t it?”

“Yes. That letter was from a firm of solicitors—Barraclough, Laurence and Tolworthy, a London firm, of Basinghall Street. They’re going to be my field number one.”

“Sounds as though I’m back in the service,” grinned the commissioner. “But I certainly agree with your idea, Bathurst. It might lead to something, especially if Maitland kept the appointment.”

“I think so. I’ll have a word or two on the phone with a man I know who’s in much the same line—in Cornhill. Peter Daventry—I’ve mentioned him to you probably more than once. He’s a good boy and he’d do anything for me.”

“Good. And what’s your second line of country?”

“Queensleigh!” returned Mr. Bathurst with very definite emphasis. “Queensleigh and the Queensleigh district, the home of Maitland’s horses, his trainer, perhaps his jockey.” He rose to his feet and paced the room excitedly. “I cannot rid myself of the conviction, Sir Austin, that the key to the problem will be found down there somewhere. The idea is fast becoming a certainty to me. There’s been some dark intrigue going on that had a turf significance which for the moment I can’t fathom. I can only grasp and grope at it. My data are insufficient. But I shall lay my hand on the crux of the question eventually and then we shall see, sir.”

“Which field are you exploring first, Bathurst? Do you intend to—”

“I incline to the three legal gentlemen, I think, sir. They’re nearer to hand for one thing.”

“Very well. Go to see them by all means as early as possible. When you run down to Wiltshire, I’ll come with you. Don’t forget to keep me posted.”

That night Anthony Bathurst did as he had indicated to Sir Austin Kemble—he slept on the problem of Julius Maitland’s murder—but he turned it over very thoroughly in his mind before sleep would come to him. He slept on them that night and all day Sunday.
